Don’t Tell Me You’re A Christian

There’s one in every conversation online,

these days,

it’s your reaction and attention that they seek.

They’ll proudly, loudly profess they’re “a Christian”,

but embellish the truth when they write and speak.

They say they read their Bible daily, and yet,

their Bible’s pages stay untouched, so pristine.

They’re in church each time the doors open, but then,

behind their own closed doors the Lord’s seen,

them mistreat their wary spouse and nervous children,

quick tempers unleashed with no good reason why.

Don’t tell me you’re “a Christian”, please ma’am,

please sir, why waste your breath and try?

If the car ahead won’t move on or just move over,

they’ll yell and cuss a disabled elderly driver out.

Somewhere down the line, somehow they forgot,

what being a Christian is truly all about.

If they can’t love and cherish their own family,

looking up to them daily, to follow their lead,

what kind of harvest will they one day reap,

scattering all their rotten and fruitless seed?

If they can’t show kindness to their family,

and can’t be merciful (like Jesus has told us to),

then how on earth can they pray for their enemies,

or forgive from the heart, as we know we should do?

I judge no one, I know there is ONLY ONE qualified,

with the agape’ love and wisdom to fill those shoes.

But I know being a Christian is NOT about a label,

we just claim and when it suits us, put on and use.

Christians are to know and use the manual, the directions;

the inspired words that tell us how we should behave.

A treasure trove of Christ’s words, who loved us so much,

he faced incredible torture down into the grave.

God sent His only begotten Son too, out of pure love ,

for flawed selfish humans, the likes of you and I.

Don’t TELL me you’re a Christian,

SHOW me that you are -

because each day each of us should try,

to fully love God, Jesus AND one another,

as God and Jesus loved us, so much, first.

So don’t TELL us you’re a Christian, do your best,

each day, I pray,

to show us that you are, not your worst.
